Secret Moments by Utsey Shelton
On December 1st of 2018, I decided how I wanted to end the year and step into 2019. I realized I wanted to read the word of God each day as I ponder the scripture and write a thought in order to gain comfort in a place of rest.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
When we begin to plan our lives, there is one part of life that is completely left out. Death. It has a way of blind-siding us to the point we become frozen in our own thoughts. When my mother passed suddenly it jolted me. Although I was moving, I wasn’t able to grasp in my mind all that was taken from me so abruptly. I became inconsistent with my prayers and tried to stay focused, but most tasks were overwhelming…I felt like the walking dead. The only consistent part of life had been finding special moments to spend with God. He knew everything before I called out to Him. Even the times I called to Him with tears while shaking my head and thinking, please God help me make it through this moment.
What I had to do was rest in Him knowing that those times were similar to King David’s thoughts when he wrote Psalms 23: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lay down in green pastures; He leads me be-side still waters, He restores my soul; He leads me in the path of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anoints my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
It was these moments with God when I could rest in assurance that He has me in the palm of His hand and He won’t let me fall as He gives me the courage and strength to not quit. There may be times that you’ve felt like you can’t speak out; and when you do speak, you’re not being heard. However, know this: people may come and go, but there is one consistent person you have…God. He never leaves you, nor forsakes you in your times of great need. In those times of desperation and uncertainty you have a hiding place in God; a place where you can utter your deepest inner thoughts while knowing you can cast your cares on Him. He cares for you, and what concerns you concerns Him.
This 31 day devotional, Secret Moments, is to take you by the hand, day-by-day, with a scripture and a thought to ponder; along with space to write down your personal thoughts and prayers. This will help you to keep your mind and heart focused as God speaks to you in your quiet time with Him. You will also gain rest and renewed strength in giving Him the first fruit of each day—your time. I urge you to sit and settle into His presence, while remaining still to inhabit his love, peace, and joy that is only found by abiding under His wings of comfort.
